Commercial EICR Testing at City of Derby School

28 May 2026

Procure Direct completed a large-scale commercial EICR and fixed wire testing project at City of Derby School during the school holidays. The project involved comprehensive electrical inspection and testing across more than 25 distribution boards to help the school maintain electrical compliance, improve safety standards, and obtain an updated EICR certificate before pupils returned.

Working within educational environments requires careful planning, strict deadlines, and a strong focus on safety. All works were completed during the holiday shutdown period to minimise disruption to teaching staff, pupils, and day-to-day school operations.

Commercial EICR Testing for Schools

Educational buildings rely heavily on safe and reliable electrical installations to support classrooms, lighting, IT infrastructure, catering facilities, and security systems. Regular eicr testing and periodic electrical inspections help identify deterioration, overloaded circuits, damaged accessories, and potential fire or electric shock risks before they become serious safety concerns.

For schools, maintaining electrical compliance is especially important due to the high occupancy levels and the need to provide a safe environment for pupils, staff, visitors, and contractors.

This project required a full electrical installation condition report across multiple areas of the school site, with all testing and remedial works completed before the new term began.

Initial Site Assessment and Project Planning

Before works commenced, Procure Direct’s project manager and director attended site to assess the scale of the installation and determine how the project could be delivered within the limited school holiday window.

Although we had previously completed works at City of Derby School, changes to the electrical installation since the last visit meant a fresh assessment was required. The site survey allowed our team to review access arrangements, assess the condition of the infrastructure, and plan the most efficient testing programme.

Because the project was taking place within a live educational setting, additional consideration was given to:

  • Safeguarding requirements
  • Holiday shutdown deadlines
  • Minimising disruption before reopening
  • Pupil-accessible electrical accessories
  • Compliance responsibilities within educational buildings

Detailed planning ensured the works could be completed safely, efficiently, and within programme.

Fixed Wire Testing and Electrical Inspection Works

The project involved extensive fixed wire testing, visual inspections, and electrical safety checks throughout the school.

Over 25 distribution boards were inspected and tested, including all associated circuits and front covers during both visual and electrical inspections. Testing procedures included dead testing and live testing to assess the condition, integrity, and safety of the electrical installation.

The works included:

  • Full commercial EICR testing
  • Distribution board inspections
  • Circuit testing
  • Insulation resistance testing
  • Continuity testing
  • Lighting circuit testing
  • Socket and switch inspections
  • RCD testing
  • Visual electrical inspections
  • Identification of electrical defects
  • Remedial electrical works

Systematic lighting circuit testing was completed throughout the building to confirm power was safely reaching all lighting points.

Particular attention was given to classrooms and pupil-accessible areas where electrical safety is especially important. Light switches and plug sockets were inspected for signs of browning, overheating, deterioration, or damage that could indicate underlying electrical faults or fire risks.

Any defects identified during the inspection process were rectified immediately and made safe by our engineers.

Completing the Commercial EICR During School Holidays

Delivering a project of this scale within a restricted school holiday period required additional manpower and careful coordination.

To ensure all testing and remedial works were completed before staff and pupils returned, Procure Direct deployed five engineers to site. This allowed multiple testing areas to be completed simultaneously while maintaining the high standards expected from a professional electrical safety tester.

The additional resource ensured the project remained on schedule without compromising safety, testing accuracy, or compliance standards.

Improving Electrical Safety and Compliance

Following completion of the commercial EICR and remedial works, the school’s electrical installation was left in a significantly safer condition for pupils, staff, and visitors.

The completed works helped reduce:

  • Risks of electric shock
  • Potential electrical fire hazards
  • Unsafe damaged accessories
  • Electrical faults within circuits
  • Compliance concerns within the installation

The updated EICR certificate also provided the school with documented evidence of the condition of its electrical infrastructure and highlighted any future recommendations for ongoing maintenance and compliance management.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a commercial EICR?

commercial EICR is an Electrical Installation Condition Report carried out within commercial buildings such as schools, offices, warehouses, and retail premises. The inspection assesses the condition and safety of the electrical installation and identifies any defects, deterioration, or compliance issues.

How often should schools complete fixed wire testing?

Most schools should complete fixed wire testing every five years, although the recommended frequency can vary depending on the condition and use of the installation. Regular inspections help schools maintain electrical compliance and reduce safety risks.

What does an EICR certificate show?

An EICR certificate outlines the condition of an electrical installation following inspection and testing. The report highlights any faults, observations, or remedial actions required to ensure the installation is safe for continued use.

Why is electrical testing important in schools?

Electrical testing helps reduce the risk of electric shock, electrical fires, and equipment failure within schools. It also helps educational facilities maintain compliance with electrical safety regulations while providing a safer environment for pupils, staff, and visitors.

What is included in fixed wire testing?

Fixed wire testing includes inspection and testing of electrical circuits, distribution boards, sockets, switches, lighting systems, and associated infrastructure to identify faults, deterioration, or potential safety concerns.

What is a landlord electrical safety certificate?

landlord electrical safety certificate confirms that an electrical installation has been inspected and tested by a qualified professional and is safe for continued use. While commonly associated with rental properties, electrical safety certification is also important across commercial and public sector buildings.
